I chose to join the band, and selected the clarinet as my instrument. For the next seven years I continued playing music only with my trusty Bb clarinet; never even considering another. But life forces change, and upon my arrival at UMW, I was unexpectedly conscripted to play the tenor saxophone as well.

I can fortunately say, however, that learning to play this new instrument has deepened my connection to music and given me a new appreciation for different ways of playing. While I initially struggled discovering how to push the air through the deeper, metallic shape of the saxophone and grasping the wider keys with my clarinet-experienced fingers, the improvement I have made in only a few months has reinspired me to double down on my passion for music and participate in the school’s ensembles.

The saxophone’s signature groove echoes and vibrates out from the frame when it is played. As a combination between brass and woodwind, the sound it emits is unique amongst instruments and stands out when I play with others. I provide both melodic solos and jazzy background support in the pieces I play; a far different experience than the supportive nature of the clarinet. I now have a greater responsibility in maintaining the flow and oftentimes the sole melody of the pieces I play now, and can express myself easier. I am so appreciative of the learning journey that I have undertaken and of the people I play with. To many more groovy jam sessions!

In middle school, I was required to take one of two branching elective paths: art or music.
